As a result of recent hospital hygiene audits, there has been an increased interest in the development of a curtain rental service for Healthcare Institutions provided by Industrial Healthcare Laundries. Previously, hospitals purchased their own curtains and in many cases sent them for dry cleaning. Subsequent tests showed that dry cleaning did not de-contaminate the curtains.
Recent textile developments have seen the introduction of fabrics which are both inherently flame retardant and can be washed at thermal disinfectant temperatures. In addition, the curtains are light repellent and can be custom made to individual design.
As there are no standards in Ireland covering exchange policies, we have for the moment adapted the policy as laid down by the NHS which is that bed screen curtains are changed at a minimum every six months and window curtains every year.
Individual institutions vary in this regard. Ad hoc changes resulting from contamination of bed screen curtains by body fluids or infectious break outs are also taken into consideration.

There are three variants to Celtic’s Curtain Service:
- Fully Managed Service – Celtic will purchase the hospital curtains, launder them and exchange them on site using Celtic staff
- Non-Managed Service – Celtic will purchase the curtains, launder them and return them to the customer for exchange
- Process Only Service – Celtic will launder the hospital curtains and return them to the customer for exchange
